DIY: Ikea Hack Kitchen Shelves
When we first viewed our house, I knew that I wanted to integrate the kitchen diner area with the kitchen more as the previous owners had made the rooms look really separate and I didn't feel like it flowed in the best way possible. My main idea in achieving this was to create some open kitchen shelving so that both spaces felt part of the same room.

As you'll read about in my previous kitchen post, the kitchen units were a red-brown when we bought the house but we got them sprayed in Valspar paint matched to Farrow & Ball Down Pipe and it really has made the kitchen look like a brand new space.
I wanted the dining part of our kitchen to have a similar look so along with painting the doors and windows in Farrow and Ball Down Pipe Eggshell, the next task was to bring the colour scheme into some shelving.
After a trip to Ikea to look at what shelves were on offer, I came home with the below which cost me just under £80.

- Ikea Varde Wall Shelf White, £35
- Ikea Ekby Valter/Ekby Osten White/Birch, £9
So, what did we do? First of all, we primed and undercoated the brackets off both shelves and the picture ledges in an all in one wood primer and undercoat. Then we painted these in Farrow & Ball Down Pipe Eggshell. It took 2-3 coats and then, that was it!
The Mosslanda picture ledges became spice racks, the Varde wall shelf became a cookbook shelf and the Ekby shelves became open shelves for all our jars, filled with pasta, rice, cereal etc.
This is the finished look. We created some really cool storage that fits into the rest of our kitchen and integrates the dining area with the main kitchen space for not a lot of money. What do you think? Would love to know if you'll be using these ideas in your own home!
