...WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT:

  • For the busy atmosphere
  • To try the latest, fashionable street food
  • For the ultimate artisan pizza at reasonable prices
  • To have a large gin and tonic at the end of a busy week

Nestled amongst Bermondsey’s old backstreets and railway arches, Marquis of Wellington offers London’s first street food pub. There might be many London restaurants boasting street food inspired menus however, Marquis of Wellington takes the idea more literally.

Each week as part of the British Street Food Takeover, Marquis of Wellington invite London’s most acclaimed street food traders to park outside and serve their specialty dishes. This is a novel way of mixing up the menu for regular cliental whilst supporting London traders.

The pub announces itself upon its neighbours with large white branded lettering on the front of the building. Surrounding it is a rustic beer garden complete with umbrellas, hipster crate benches, breezeblock fire pits and faux-graffiti.

Inside the buzzing atmosphere is immediate, and exactly what a Friday night venue calls for, making it the ideal location for drinks with friends and quick food. My partner and I were seated amidst the hustle and bustle on old school chairs where we waited to be served.

Aside from the street food offerings, Marquis of Wellington pride themselves on their artisan hand rolled pizzas. The pizzas, coupled with authentic Italian toppings, are created behind the bar in full view of the restaurant, which adds to the lively ambiance.

We started with two generous pizza garlic breads, which were crisp and delicious. The San Marzano tomato made for a beautifully rich base which was complimented by the delicate toppings of roasted aubergine and calabrese chilli.

On recommendation, I opted for the salami pizza which didn’t disappoint. It was greasy, spicy and delectable. Both pizzas were cooked to perfection with thin crisp bases, making them one of the best pizzas I’ve had in London.

Marquis of Wellington ticks all the boxes: great atmosphere, amazing pizzas and reasonable prices. Definitely somewhere I’ll return to on a Friday (or just about any night of the week).
