BEDRUTHAN HOTEL & SPA: CORNWALL

13-15/10/18

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT:

  • For the close proximity to Mawgan Porth beach

  • Chill out in the picturesque spa

  • Enjoy one of many different G&T’s

  • Take in the wonderful sea view from the hotel

DESTINATION:

The Bedruthan Hotel & Spa is situated in an enviable spot overlooking Mawgan Porth beach. Other than the hotel itself, nearby sister hotel The Scarlet and a few beach cafes, there is little else in the vicinity but you are only a short drive or bus journey to the seaside towns of Newquay or Padstow and about 5 minutes away from Watergate Bay (with Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant). It’s also in close proximity to Newquay airport if you’re flying in for your visit.

For those just wanting to relax, the hotel is a perfect place to be able to unwind and do nothing and there is ample provided with its spa, outdoor pool, two restaurants and bar and it also has many events throughout the year. That was exactly why my Mum and I were visiting and we were looking forward to a chilled out break!

DECOR:

The hotel has a retro inspired interior which hints at the hotel’s 50+ year history. Expect mid-century sideboards adorned with vintage coloured glass mixed with modern retro scandi furniture and lighting, bright colours and kitsch floral patterns.

This very much suited the fact that the hotel was playing host to a two-day Mid-century and vintage fair whilst we were there. It was the perfect setting for stalls filled with retro homeware and furniture, vintage clothes and old vinyl, all accompanied by retro live music. As two antiques lovers, we had a great time looking at all the stalls and I found some lovely gold clip-on earrings and an amazing cocktail dress to take home with me. There was a good mix of furniture, homeware, clothes and jewellery stalls and prices were largely reasonable.

I loved the bright and fresh decor of the Wild Cafe and one of my favourite rooms in the hotel was the ‘Quiet Room’ which was adults only and felt like a room straight out of Mad Men. It was the perfect spot to curl up with the paper and a cuppa in front of the room’s roaring fire.

The vintage vibe continued into the hotel’s bedroom decor, but I did feel that these rooms were looking a little tired and dated and could benefit from a refresh. This continued into the bathroom, which was also on the small side.

What our room did have, and is something which continues throughout the main areas of the hotel, is the most beautiful view of the sea. I spent many a moment gazing into the distance feeling completely content and relaxed.

DINING:

We were eating in both of the hotel’s restaurants during our stay - The Wild Cafe and The Herring. The Wild Cafe is the more relaxed restaurant, where the hotel also serves breakfast each morning, and The Herring is for more intimate and quiet meals. Both have reasonable two or three course set menu offers.

I personally thought The Herring was by far the better restaurant of the two and we enjoyed a lovely meal there on our last night in the hotel. I ate delicately sweet Lobster Ravioli to start and enjoyed the best Pork Tenderloin I think I’ve ever eaten for my main, which was perfectly cooked and complimented by a Sage Granola.

Our meal at The Wild Cafe wasn’t quite as successful. My starter of Dressed Crab was quite tasteless and the main of steak and chips was disappointing, with overcooked crispy onions, a bland chimicurri and watery vegetables. My dessert of Sticky Toffee Pudding, however, was delicious with a great butterscotch sauce.

Breakfast time has a nice atmosphere that is very relaxed and you’re left to enjoy your meal whilst gazing out at the sea. There is plenty of choice with a help-yourself continental and cooked option and daily specials on the board. I loved the bright Orla Kiely mugs for tea and coffee too.

DEBRIEF:

We had an enjoyable stay at the Bedruthan Hotel & Spa. The vintage fair is a fun event and is perfectly suited to the hotel and we loved relaxing in the spa on the final day, which is well equipped with swimming pool, large jacuzzi, steam room and sauna and an outdoor terrace overlooking the sea. The view across the whole hotel is pretty hard to beat!
